Gardening Tips: Growing Blackberries in Texas

Blackberries growing on the vine at StarHill Farms

Most of the time here in Texas when you say the word blackberry, people's eyes light up. Nothing beats that good old cell phone with the roller that would always go out... Wait a minute... You know that's not what I mean to say. I'm sure your mouth is telling you otherwise. Down here in Texas blackberries are almost a staple in our diets. I know that not every state has blackberries, so I definitely consider us fortunate to be able to get them. If you enjoy gardening and are looking for something to jazz up your variety of things to grow I would definitely suggest blackberries.

Get crafty and preserve the blackberries you grow like we do at the farm.

There are many varieties to choose from and many range in size and color. One thing is for sure though, blackberries are very easy to grow. Give them plenty of sun, something to climb on, and just the right amount of water and you're set. After they are established, the plants will give you the option to expand. They will send off shoots from the roots that you can dig up and replant. I personally, haven't had much luck with the thornless varieties in berry production, but what's a good blackberry picking experience without getting your hands covered in purple juice and thorns!

Blackberries taste great and are packed with nutrients to keep your body up to par. You can eat them fresh, cook them, infuse them in water, and make jelly. You can also brew tea with the leaves of the plant. I wish there was more I could say about these wonderful little berries, but honestly, go and try one, and it will speak volumes for itself. Happy picking y'all!
